EU issues $20 billion tax list against US

After the United States threatened to impose tariffs on EU goods worth about $11 billion on the 8th, the European Union also issued a list of US goods worth about $20 billion on the 17th, threatening to impose tariffs.

Cecilia Malmström, commissioner for trade affairs of the European Commission, said in a statement on the 17th that the EU must defend a level playing field for the European aircraft manufacturing industry, but the EU does not want to be tit-for-tat with the United States. The statement also clearly released the desire to resolve the issue through negotiations.

Malmstrom said: "If there is no other way (to solve this problem), we need to be prepared to take countermeasures. But I still believe that for important partners like the EU and the United States, dialogue should be the ultimate way out, especially when it comes to resolving this long-standing dispute. The EU is still willing to discuss with the United States as long as it does not set preconditions and aims to achieve a fair result."

The list issued by the EU on the same day covers a wide range of products, from aircraft to chemicals and agricultural products. The EU will launch a public consultation on the list. The EU said that the final amount of tariffs on US goods will also be made in consideration of the WTO's arbitration decision on the Boeing subsidy case.

The aviation industry countervailing dispute between the United States and the European Union, which focuses on the two major aviation giants, Boeing and Airbus, has a long history. In 2004, the United States filed a lawsuit with the WTO, accusing the EU of providing illegal subsidies to Airbus in various forms; and the EU subsequently sued the WTO against the US government for providing huge illegal subsidies to Boeing. In this regard, the WTO has ruled that the United States and the European Union have the problem of providing illegal subsidies to their respective aviation enterprises.

The US government recently accused the EU of illegally subsidizing Airbus and causing adverse effects on the United States. On the 8th, the Office of the United States Trade Representative launched the Section 301 procedure of the US Trade Act of 1974, intending to impose tariffs on EU products worth about US $11 billion. European Commission officials later said that the EU may take retaliatory measures against the United States for illegal subsidies to Boeing.
